Vitamin D Supplements Cause no Improvement in Healthy Children’s Bone Density

Vitamin D supplements taken by children with already having adequate levels of vitamin D don't cause much benefits for upgrading their bone density, as per a review released on Wednesday. The Cochrane Systematic Review revealed that children with normal levels of Vitamin D, taking Vitamin D supplements do not get improvements in the bone density at the hip, lumbar spine, forearm or in their whole body. By measuring bone density, the strength of the bone can and the prevalence of bone minerals can be assessed. The problems like osteoporosis can be prevented with a strong bone density. The research was led by Dr. Tania Winzenberg, from the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania, Hobart. The findings are based on the already existing six studies that made a comparison between children taking vitamin D supplements and placebo, assigned randomly to them. In total, the studies constituted 343 participants. It was found that no specific effect was achieved from Vitamin D supplementation on total bone mineral content. A little effect was found on lumbar spine BMD and there was no significant difference whether the participants were given low or heavy doses of Vitamin D. "Vitamin D supplementation had no statistically significant effects on bone density at any site in healthy children. There was, however, some indication that children who had low levels of vitamin D in their blood might benefit from supplementation", said Dr. Winzenberg.
